project management & consulting

I still remember the day when one of my longtime writing and editing clients approached me with what they called "a crazy idea." I was intrigued. I like crazy ideas.

The CEO and assembly manager of this famous California auto suspension company asked me, "We're wondering if you'd consider organizing the parts room." There was a pause while I remembered the space--large, dimly fluorescent-lit, filthy with grease and metal filings, and utterly chaotic. Expensive, finely machined aluminum parts were piled in dark corners and lay around the floors in the muck.

"Sure!" I replied. And the next five months were a total blast. Not only did I color code and shelf every damn part in that room in its own special container, I created a series of binders (alphabetical by part name) with photos and instructions for the fed-up assembly crew. When I was done, these beat-up guys with bad morale were thrilled to be able to find the parts on their work orders without excavating half the room. They laughed at the smiley face and heart stickers I put on the category signs and started joking around again. Productivity went way up.

It was a huge project and I loved every minute of it. Since then I've managed tons of projects, from a "Kids Unplugged" day of outdoor fun at a rural meditation retreat (no screens allowed!) to getting several nonprofits off the ground.

Do you have a project idea that feels overwhelming? Have an existing situation that's got all bogged down? Shoot me an email and let's figure it out! I'm your Huckleberry.
